Child porn ring relative finds safehouse

Lauren Hess, News24

Cape Town – A relative of the family arrested for being involved in one of South Africa’s worst child pornography rings showed up on Friday at the safehouse where the victims were being cared for.

Pretoria police raided houses early on Thursday morning, arresting a grandfather, 58, grandmother, 57, their two sons, 34 and 36, from previous relationships, the grandfather’s brother, 61, and his wife, 42, their mentally disabled son, 28, as well as the 26-year-old wife of one of the sons, The Times Live reported.

Four children were removed from the homes and placed in the care of guardian at a safehouse.

But according to Solidarity Helping Hands, Surika van Schalkwyk, a relative of the family arrested showed up at the safehouse and “tried to intimidate the guardians”.

Van Schalkwyk told News24 she did not know how the relative found out where the safehouse was since “no one” was told.

Police spokesperson Lungela Dlamini could not confirm this.

More arrests, victims

Meanwhile, Dlamini said that more arrests are possible as police study the evidence taken in.

Police seized cellphones, computers and laptops, hard drives, memory sticks, DVDs, videotapes, and firearms. These will be taken for forensic analysis, Dlamini said, after which they will see if more children were involved.

Solidarity’s Van Schalkwyk told how the traumatised children reacted to being taken away from their family by officials.

“The one boy, a 9-year-old, he was very aggressive, I’ve never seen anyone that aggressive.

“He tried running out of the car (when we tried taking him away). He didn’t understand. He kept saying he wants to die and that he will jump out of the car.

“The other boy, aged 8, was just quiet and just cried all the time.

“The girl, 13, was very confused,” Van Schalkwyk said.

Praying

She said later when they were in the car the 9-year-old prayed while rocking back and forth.

A bible was found in one of the houses.

She told how the parents of one of the children “was so normal”.

“They looked like normal parents, paedophiles that looked normal,” Van Schalkwyk said.

She said that the case highlights how disconnected people are from each other.

“I don’t get how people didn’t know. I just don’t get it.”
